THE MENOPAUSE AT WORK

Women usually experience the menopause between 45 and 55, with 51 being the average age. Since the employment rate in the UK has grown substantially for women aged between 50 and 64, and 80% of women experience menopausal symptoms, it’s not surprising that the menopause can have a significant effect on a woman’s working life.

NON-HORMONAL HELP FOR FLUSHES/SWEATS

Hot flushes and night sweats are the most common menopausal symptoms, but their impact varies from woman to woman. Although they can be distressing and affect quality of life, it’s thought that they only last a short time. However, about 16% of women continue to report these symptoms for longer, with two percent of women complaining of symptoms into their 70s.

OESTROGEN-ONLY AND MONTHLY-BLEED HRT

HRT can be used in many ways. The decision to prescribe HRT in a particular form is made once you have had a comprehensive medical history with risk-benefit evaluation and you’re happy to consider HRT. There is a settling in phase of up to three to four months when starting HRT or when changing formulations. In this article, we look at oestrogen-only HRT and ‘monthly bleed’ sequentially combined HRT. ‘No bleed’ continuous combined HRT was discussed in the last issue.
